Description

Heavy snowfall was forecast – perfect conditions for a true winter survival night. Without a tent or sleeping bag, I built a shelter designed to retain the heat from the fire and added side snow walls for wind protection. The shelter was surprisingly tight and held the warmth well. When the fire burned low, it quickly became freezing cold. As soon as I got it going again, it became noticeably warmer – but then the snow at the entrance started to melt and water kept dripping down on me. This constant trade-off between warmth and melting snow made the night especially challenging. Despite that, I made it through the night. Next time, I’ll better estimate the distance between the shelter and the fire, as well as the thickness of the roof, so it won’t drip anymore.
