Description

Zeus did not win the Titan War with lightning. For the first ten years he did not have any. Hesiod's Theogony says the war lasted ten full years with neither side moving a step - because immortals cannot be killed, so there was nothing to win. What broke it was Zeus going down into the earth, opening a prison his own grandfather had put six beings into, and asking them for help. Three of them forged the thunderbolt. Three of them threw three hundred rocks at once. The war ended almost immediately. And what Zeus did with those six afterwards is the part that tells you what kind of king he was going to be. Apollodorus is used only for the trident and the helm, where Hesiod is silent. Where the two disagree about when the Hundred-Handed and the Cyclopes were imprisoned and released, this video follows Hesiod and says so.
