Description

Was Sanskrit really India's first language? In this episode of Before The Gods, we go back before the gods — to the words themselves. Spoken language existed long before writing, which means history's earliest Indian languages may have vanished without a single record. We trace India's major language families — Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Munda and Tibeto-Burman — and examine why ancient India was never linguistically silent. It was multilingual. The statement Sanskrit Was NOT India's First Language can create debate but Here's What Came Before. We look at Vedic Sanskrit and how it differs from Classical Sanskrit, why Panini's grammar froze a living tradition into a system, and how Prakrit and Middle Indo-Aryan varieties existed alongside it. We also cover the Harappan language problem: thousands of Indus Valley script inscriptions survive, but with no bilingual key and extremely short texts, the underlying language remains unidentified. Sanskrit, Dravidian and Munda are all unproven — and a completely lost language remains possible. The Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati and Marathi we speak today connect to this history through centuries of change, not a sudden jump from Sanskrit. Language contact shaped even our sounds — the retroflex ṭ, ṭh, ḍ, ḍh found across South Asia. ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 Was Sanskrit India's First Language? 0:45 Language and Writing Are Not the Same Thing 1:24 How Historical Linguistics Reconstructs Lost Languages 1:39 South Asia's Four Major Language Families 2:13 Sanskrit: Indo-European Roots, Vedic vs Classical 3:07 The Prakrit Misconception — Middle Indo-Aryan 3:44 How Hindi, Bengali, Marathi Actually Evolved 4:05 The Dravidian Family — Older Than South India? 4:55 Munda Languages: The Family Everyone Forgets 5:30 How Languages Change Each Other (Retroflex Sounds) 6:29 The Harappan Language Mystery — Undeciphered Script 7:39 Was Sanskrit Really India's First Language?
