Description
A Tiny Vibration Tore This Ship Machine Apart ⚙️
A ship's fuel purifier running at 8,000 RPM broke. The cause? Just a little off balance, after a bearing failed. At that speed, a small shake becomes a huge force. How a bearing causes this is pinned below.
How does one bearing wreck a purifier? A failed bearing lets the bowl spin off balance. At full speed, even a small imbalance becomes a huge force. Here, the vibration sensor and overload protection failed too, so nothing stopped it.
This is what a centrifugal separator failure looks like when the safety chain breaks at the same time as the machine does — a ship engine room failure where a marine engine technician's three independent protections all failed at once. Not bad luck: a single bearing , a missed vibration analysis reading, and an engine failure that had nothing left to catch it.
