Description
In 1861, a Lincolnshire glazier named Josiah Renwick climbed to the roof of the Marrow Fen Union Workhouse to repair a lantern skylight. What he found above the spinning room led to an off-the-books assignment, a silent refusal of future parish contracts, and a dark institutional secret kept quiet for over half a century. Designed on the panopticon principle, the workhouse's elevated lantern roof featured a hidden crawl gallery that allowed overseers to monitor inmates unnoticed. Over time, this unmapped gallery housed unaccounted-for shifts, strange wall-anchored iron fittings, and tally marks cut directly into the timber framing—coinciding with the disappearance of 43 inmates from parish records.
When World War I brought the Lighting Restriction Order of 1915, the 22 skylight panes were painted black to block light from air raids. Long after the war ended, through transition into a private worsted mill, the dark paint remained intact to blur the line between day and night for workers inside. Uncover the full, haunting historical account of secrecy, institutional control, and the hidden gallery that hid the truth above Marrow Fen.
