Description
In October 1990, during the buildup to the Gulf War, a 15-year-old Kuwaiti girl known only as “Nayirah” gave emotional testimony before the U.S. Congressional Human Rights Caucus.
She claimed that Iraqi soldiers had entered a hospital in Kuwait City, removed babies from incubators, and left them on the floor to die. During the testimony, she presented herself as a volunteer nurse at the hospital, which made her story appear especially credible.
The testimony was widely reported in international media and cited by politicians in the United States, including George H. W. Bush, as evidence of Iraqi brutality during the occupation of Kuwait.
However, after the war began, journalists later revealed that the girl was actually the daughter of Kuwait’s ambassador to the United States and had not been working as a nurse. Investigations also found that the testimony had been coached by a public relations firm hired by the Kuwaiti government.
The incident later became one of the most well-known examples of controversial wartime propaganda during the Gulf War era.
