Description
A dull, dark rock sold at Sotheby’s for $5.3 million. Another black “diamond” fetched $4.3 million. And a tiny piece of the Moon can cost more per gram than gold. In this video I count down 7 black rocks that look like nothing but can be worth serious money: black tourmaline, rainbow and snowflake obsidian, tektites, iron meteorites, carbonado, Martian meteorites, and lunar meteorites.
You’ll learn where each one forms, where collectors actually find them, how to recognize fusion crust and regmaglypts, and what the real market prices are. I also walk through a 5-step home testing system (magnet, streak, specific gravity, nickel spot test, acid etch) so you can check a suspicious rock before you throw it away or overpay for one.

⚠️ Important notes: Always get landowner permission before collecting on private land, and check BLM or local rules on public land. Export laws for meteorites vary by country and change quickly. Acid and chemical tests require gloves, eye protection, and ventilation. Cutting or etching a rare specimen can permanently reduce its value, so consider professional classification first. Prices mentioned are based on public auction reports and dealer market analysis and vary widely.
