Description
In the 1950s and 60s, Wen-Mac brought real internal combustion power straight to the toy aisle! Long before electric batteries or ready-to-fly drones took over, Wen-Mac was the undisputed king of ready-to-fly gas-powered airplanes and thrill-seeking tethered cars for kids.
Founded by brothers Jack and Lennart Wennerstrom, Wen-Mac eliminated the headache of building complex balsa kits from scratch. With their iconic high-impact plastic bodies, scale realism—like their famous *P-51 Mustang*, *A-4 Skyhawk*, and *1957 Corvette*—and their patented **Rotromatic Starter**, Wen-Mac put the thrill of screaming .049 glow engines into the hands of millions.
So how did a small California workshop conquer department stores nationwide, collaborate with major aerospace brands, and then suddenly vanish under corporate buyouts?
In this video, we trace the full history, mechanical innovations, and eventual decline of Wen-Mac!
🔍 Key Highlights Covered in This Episode
Instant Aviation: How Wen-Mac pioneered factory-assembled, injection-molded plastic control-line planes that you could take straight from the box to the field.
No More Cut Fingers: The engineering magic behind the pull-spring Rotromatic Starter that saved young pilots from hand-flicking razor-sharp propellers.
Corporate Game of Musical Chairs: How acquisitions by AMF and eventual merging into The Testor Corporation wiped the iconic Wen-Mac name off store shelves.
Collector Gold: Why surviving vintage Wen-Mac planes and gas cars command top dollar on the collector market today.
