On September 26th, 2024, the strongest hurricane ever recorded in Florida's Big Bend made landfall on the Gulf Coast. But it wasn't the wind on the coast that killed the most people. It was the water that came for the mountains – rain that fell on ground already soaked days before the storm arrived, funneled by narrow Appalachian valleys into walls of water that drowned towns more than 500 miles from where Helene came ashore. What followed became the deadliest hurricane to strike the American mainland since Katrina.
