Description

Maya had exactly forty-eight hours to finish her final project, and she had spent forty-seven of them staring at a blank screen. So when her roommate banged on the door and yelled that the dorm's ancient washing machine had flooded the basement, Maya grabbed the excuse like a lifeline. She didn't expect to find the basement already occupied. A guy was standing ankle-deep in soapy water, holding a mop like it was a sword, wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist and one sock. He turned when he heard her on the stairs, and for one long, horrifying second, neither of them spoke. It was Daniel. Daniel from her statistics class. Daniel who had asked her, three weeks ago, if she wanted to study together, and she had panicked and said, "I have a dentist appointment," which was a lie so obvious that his polite nod still haunted her at 3 a.m. "Oh," he said. "Hi." "Oh," Maya said. "Hi." The washing machine gurgled and belched another wave of foam across the floor. "My clothes," Daniel explained, gesturing vaguely at himself. "The machine ate them. Then it tried to eat me. I think it's possessed." Maya should have said something normal. Something like "do you need help" or "I'll get maintenance" or literally any combination of words that formed a complete human sentence. Instead, her brain—overloaded, underslept, and desperate—offered up the worst possible thing it could find: "Nice sock." Daniel looked down at his single sock. Then back at her. Then at his bare foot, which was currently submerged in soap water. "I only had one clean one," he said, with the dignity of a man who had clearly given up. And then Maya laughed. Not a cute laugh. Not a giggle. A full, snorting, undignified honk that echoed off the basement walls and startled a spider near the ceiling. She clapped a hand over her mouth, mortified, but it was too late—Daniel was laughing too, and then they were both standing in a flooded basement, laughing at nothing, at everything, at the single sock and the possessed washing machine and the fact that they were both clearly disasters. "Okay," Daniel said finally, wiping his eyes. "This is the worst moment of my entire college career." "Same," Maya said. "And I once tripped into a professor at a formal dinner. Face-first. Into his soup." "Wow. Okay. You win." "It's not a competition I wanted to win." They stood there for a moment, the water slowly soaking into Maya's sneakers, and she realized with a strange warmth that she wasn't panicking anymore. Not about the project, not about the dentist lie, not about the fact that she was laughing in a basement with a half-naked guy from stats. "Hey," Daniel said. "Since we're both here, and neither of us has anything to do except watch a washing machine destroy a building... want to study after this? If your dentist schedule is still clear." Maya felt her face go red. "You knew that was a lie?" "You looked at the ceiling when you said it. Nobody looks at the ceiling for a dentist appointment." She wanted to die. She also wanted to laugh again. "My dentist canceled," she said. "Turns out I'm free." Daniel grinned. "Great. Let me go find a second sock." Later, when maintenance finally arrived to wrestle the washing machine into submission, Maya and Daniel were sitting on the dry steps, sharing a bag of chips she'd found in her backpack and comparing their worst cringe stories. His involved a karaoke night and a misinterpreted love song. Hers now involved a washing machine and a single sock.
