How to unclog a toilet without a plunger using about $2 of dish soap and hot water - and, honestly, when this famous trick works, when it fails, and when the smart move is the plumber. Millions of people have tried the dish soap toilet trick; this video explains the mechanism, the two details the short clips skip, the two moves that stop an overflow before you start, and the three clogs no liquid will ever fix.
The method: do not flush again - push the flapper closed and shut the supply valve if water is rising, bail out a third of the bowl to make room, pour half a cup to a cup of dish soap slowly around the bowl and wait 10-15 minutes, then pour a bucket of hot (never boiling) tap water from waist height and wait 15-20 minutes. Repeat two or three rounds if needed. Patience is the whole trick.
-----------
What's covered:
- Why the fourth flush causes more overflows than the clog does, and how to stop the fill instantly with the flapper and supply valve
- The trap (S-bend) anatomy and why a soft clog compresses under a plunger but slides after soap: surfactant plus lubrication plus heat plus weight
- The two skipped details: a real amount of soap (half a cup to a cup), and hot tap water never boiling - boiling water can crack cold porcelain
- Where a flange plunger fits (after the soap), and why this trick exists for people without one or without the strength to use one
- The three clogs it cannot touch: hard objects (toilet auger, ~$25), so-called flushable wipes (they mat and do not break down), and a main line backup (more than one fixture struggling = service call)
- The 10-second test before you start, and the red line that means stop
- The catch: why a toilet that clears and re-clogs within weeks is telling you about a partial blockage, mineral scale narrowing the rim jets, or an underpowered low-flow toilet
- Honest grades: dish soap + hot water A (soft clogs), flange plunger A, toilet auger B+, baking soda and vinegar C-, wire hanger D, chemical toilet openers F
- Prevention in three lines, and the final math

Costs are typical published ranges and vary by region.
Safety note: never use boiling water in a toilet bowl, and never mix chemical drain products with any other method. If water is backing up in more than one fixture, stop and call a plumber - that is a main-line problem.
