Description
Nearly 250 years ago, a free man named Masavana led a deadly uprising aboard the Dutch slave ship Meermin. This is his forgotten story.
In January 1766, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship Meermin left Madagascar for Cape Town, carrying over 140 enslaved Malagasy people crammed below deck. Among them was Masavana, a 26-year-old free man tricked into captivity. Refusing to accept his fate, Masavana and his fellow captives seized a fatal opportunity when the crew recklessly unshackled them and handed them spears (assagais) to clean.
What followed was a bloody fight for survival. The enslaved men took control of the ship, killed 30 sailors, and forced the surviving officers to sail them back home to Madagascar. But through a breathtaking deception and a famous message sent in a floating bottle, the Dutch crew tricked the rebels and steered the ship toward the treacherous Cape Agulhas.
Featuring historical investigations by Prof. Nigel Worden, heritage activist Lucy Campbell, and marine archaeologist Jako Boshoff, this gripping documentary uncovers the trial, the search for the sunken shipwreck, and the legacy of South Africa's first freedom fighters.
