Description

🔗 93 things every Appalachian grandfather knew. How many are left in you? https://burlsizemore.com There is a stick standing in the corner behind my front door, and it has been standing there since before I was born. It is a crooked root of mountain laurel, what the old people up here called ivy, with a knob on top the size of a fist. My grandfather carried it for fifty one years, to church and to the courthouse and to the bank in town, and not one person ever asked him to leave it at the door. In this one I take you through everything he taught me about it. The wood that will not split. Why you cut it in the dead of winter, in the dark of the moon. A year in the smokehouse rafters. The right height, the knob, the thong, the brass shoe on the bottom. And the four things a stick like that keeps an old man safe from, without ever raising it over his head. One August afternoon in nineteen sixty two, a dog came up out of the ditch at the bend of our road, and I was eight years old and holding on to his belt. The marks are still in the wood. But he told me the stick was really for something else, and I did not understand him until I was sixty five and lying flat on my back on a sheet of ice. Most of what I know came out of the margins of his ledgers. A few years back I wrote ninety three of those old ways down in one book, the way he would have told them to you on the porch. So tell me down below. What was your granddaddy's stick made of, and what state did he carry it in? https://burlsizemore.com
