Description

Mount Gongga. At 24,790 feet, or 7,556 meters, it is the highest mountain in Sichuan, China, and almost no one outside the country has ever heard of it. It is not one of the fourteen eight-thousanders. It is not close to the tallest mountain on Earth. But by the measure that matters most, how many it has killed against how many it has let reach the top, Mount Gongga may be the single deadliest major mountain ever climbed. For the first fifty years after it was first climbed, more people died trying to reach its summit than ever stood on it. Even today, Chinese mountaineering authorities rank its death rate above Everest and above all fourteen of the world's eight-thousanders. This is the story of how a remote and beautiful peak, once mistaken for the tallest on Earth, became China's mountain of death. Make sure to subscribe for weekly videos!
