They call them energy losers, and they are right. Number two is the window that is a heater for six hours a day and a hole in your wall for the other eighteen. Number three is why the shiny emergency blanket is not doing what you think. It bounces back the heat your own body is throwing off. It does nothing at all about the cold coming up through the floor you are sitting on. Insulation under you is worth more than insulation over you, and you already own the cushions. Number four is the one where people die, and it is never the exotic mistake. When the Texas grid went down in February of 2021, the fire marshal in Harris County counted four hundred and seventy five carbon monoxide calls in a single week. When researchers in Houston went back through those cases, more than sixty percent of them were one thing. A charcoal grill carried indoors. And number five is a fifteen minute walk around your own house with a flashlight, which ends with five answers written on a card and taped inside a cabinet door. Your furnace, your cooktop, your fireplace, your water heater and your alarm. Some of those keep working with the power off and some of them quit the second the lights do, and the difference is printed on the label.
