Description
The Southern Baptist Convention is losing approximately 1,000 members every day. But why?
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) was once the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, reaching approximately 16.3 million members in 2006. Since then, membership has declined every year, falling to approximately 13 million by 2023. That represents roughly 3.3 million fewer members in seventeen years.
This documentary investigates the five major reasons behind the Southern Baptist Convention's decline — and why SBC leaders have already been studying these problems for years.
We examine:
1. The Sexual Abuse Crisis — including the 2022 Guidepost Solutions investigation and the devastating impact it had on trust in SBC leadership.
2. The Collapse in Baptisms — why annual baptisms have fallen dramatically from their historic peak and what that reveals about Southern Baptist evangelism.
3. Political Entanglement — how the close relationship between Southern Baptist identity and American political identity may be pushing younger Christians away.
4. The Discipleship Deficit — why making decisions for Christ has not always resulted in lifelong discipleship and genuine spiritual formation.
5. The Generational Transfer Failure — why approximately two-thirds of young people raised in Southern Baptist churches leave after high school and why many never return.
The SBC has taken steps to address these problems, including abuse-prevention initiatives, church planting, discipleship resources, and efforts to reach younger generations. But the documentary asks whether these solutions address the deeper structural issues behind the decline.
Ultimately, this is bigger than the Southern Baptist Convention.
The SBC's story may be a mirror of the wider American church.
The documentary closes with a biblical call to repent, return, rebuild genuine evangelism, recover discipleship, care for the vulnerable, and return to the things the church was called to do first.
