Geneticists Revealed The Jamaicans Were Never Who We Thought | Here's What The DNA Shows For centuries, history books claimed that Jamaica’s indigenous Taíno population disappeared completely after European colonization. But modern DNA research is challenging that long-accepted story. This video explores genetic studies of Jamaica’s Maroon communities, particularly Accompong Town, where researchers identified Native American maternal ancestry alongside an overwhelmingly African genetic heritage. These findings raise a remarkable possibility: some Taíno survivors may have escaped into Jamaica’s mountainous interior, where they later formed communities and families with Africans who fled colonial slavery. We trace the evidence through ancient DNA, Maroon oral traditions, archaeological discoveries, Taíno place names and cultural influences, and the extraordinary history of Cockpit Country. The story also examines how colonial records shaped the traditional narrative of Taíno extinction—and why genetic evidence is forcing researchers to reconsider what “disappearance” really meant. Rather than replacing Jamaica’s powerful African heritage, these discoveries reveal an even more complex story of survival, resistance, migration, and cultural continuity. The DNA preserved in living communities suggests that people once declared extinct may have survived in ways written history failed to record. Discover what genetics reveals about Jamaica’s hidden ancestry—and why the story of the Taíno and the Maroons may be far more interconnected than generations were taught.
