I've fished Michigan lakes for sixty years, and in this video I take a $1,500 fish finder apart job by job and show you the cheap way old anglers did each one, starting with a $2 lead clip that's sold under the very same name: depth finder.
In this video:
The clip-on depth finder and slip bobber that set your bait to the inch
Why a standard 20-degree sonar cone only sees a circle about a third as wide as the water is deep
Reading the bottom with one sinker, counting down a lure, and letting gulls and wind find the fish
The one job only the expensive screen does, and why tournaments and Mississippi's crappie limits reined it in
A fish finder works. The lie is that you can't find fish without one. Depth, bottom, temperature and a lake map cost a few dollars or nothing at all.
As always: check your state's fishing regulations before you fish. Lead tackle laws (New Hampshire bans lead sinkers and jigs of one ounce or less in fresh water) and lake-by-lake crappie limits differ everywhere. Wear your life jacket in a boat, especially in cold fall water.
Where's your best spot, and how deep is it? Tell me below, I read every comment.
