Description
Obduracy — refusing to revise a decision you've already made. It's the most profitable thing a salesperson knows about you.
In 1978, researchers ran three experiments on the oldest trick in car sales. One group was told the full cost up front. Another was told a cheaper cost, agreed — and only then had the cost raised. The second group complied MORE. Consistently.
Their own phrase for it: an active preliminary decision tends to persevere, even after the reason you made it stops being true.
You didn't get talked into it twice. You made one decision, then spent ten minutes defending it to yourself.
THE DEFENSE: set your ceiling BEFORE you hear the number, and write it down. A decision made before the pressure is the only one that survives it.
