Description
Tokyo is preparing for a disaster that could reshape one of the largest metropolitan areas on Earth.
Japan estimates that a magnitude 7-class earthquake has roughly a 70% probability of striking the southern Kanto region within the next 30 years. At the same time, Tokyo faces major risks from flooding, typhoons, fires, infrastructure failures, power outages, and aging buildings.
That is why Tokyo launched the TOKYO Resilience Project — a massive long-term effort designed to make the city more resistant to disasters.
In this documentary, we go underground and behind the scenes to explore how Tokyo is preparing for the next major disaster — from enormous underground flood tunnels and giant water-storage chambers to earthquake-resistant buildings, buried power lines, upgraded water networks, emergency evacuation infrastructure, backup power, communications, and full-scale disaster testing.
Some of the most important defenses are hidden beneath the streets, inside buildings, or buried underground — systems most people will never notice unless disaster strikes.
The original project was announced with a total scale of approximately ¥15 trillion through the 2040s. Tokyo has since upgraded the project, so figures and targets can evolve over time.
