Description

Germany built 420 Flakpanzer Gepards to shoot down Soviet helicopters, took them out of service in 2010, dissolved the whole anti-aircraft branch in 2012, and left the last fifty under tarpaulins at a tank-breaker's yard. Then came a war fought with $40,000 drones against $4 million missiles, and the cheapest answer anyone had was a 1970s gun in a scrapyard. Germany bought its own Gepards back from Qatar, restarted a 35 mm ammunition line, and by 2025 its final aid list to Ukraine read seventy. This is the story: the 1973 order, the night of 7 September 2023 near Odesa, the peace activist who found the guns under the tarps, the Swiss ammunition veto, the crews who learned to kill a Shahed with eleven rounds, the sixty Jordanian guns the US bought, the "Gepard 2.0" the Bundeswehr is ordering now, and the two Gepards you can still watch run.
