A New Human Species Was Found in the Philippines — Then the World Forgot

In 2019, scientists made one of the most astonishing discoveries in human evolution—a previously unknown human species hidden inside Callao Cave on Luzon Island, Philippines. Named Homo luzonensis, this ancient human species possessed a unique combination of primitive and modern features unlike Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo erectus, or modern humans. The discovery challenged long-held theories about early human migration and raised one of archaeology's greatest unanswered questions: How did ancient humans reach the Philippine islands hundreds of thousands of years ago when deep ocean water separated them from mainland Asia? In this documentary, we explore the complete story behind Homo luzonensis—from the first fossil discovered in 2007, through more than a decade of scientific research, to the landmark 2019 announcement that revealed an entirely new branch of the human family tree. You'll also discover the surprising connection between Homo luzonensis and Indonesia's famous Homo floresiensis ("The Hobbit"), the competing theories about prehistoric sea crossings, and why one of the biggest discoveries in archaeology has been largely forgotten by the public.
