Description
You’re Probably KILLING Your Fruit Trees if You Do THIS!
There is an orchard up the holler from me, kept by an old man who has tended those trees for forty years, and in all that time not one limb has split. Not a one. Every branch bows low with fruit come August, and every one holds. For years I planted my own trees the way most folks do, and I lost more of them than I care to count, including my best peach tree, split clean down the middle under her first real crop after seven years of waiting. So one day I swallowed my pride and asked him how he does it. What he told me was so simple I near laughed, for it cost nothing but a pair of pruners and a bit of knowing. In this video I give you his whole secret.
My name is Zeb Combs, and I have kept fruit trees back up this holler in the Appalachian mountains my whole life. And I will tell you, a fruit tree is the longest wager a gardener ever makes. But here is what my neighbor understood that most folks never do. His secret is not one clever cut. It is two parts working together. There is the right way to cut a tree that has already gone wrong, and far more important, a way of shaping the tree young so it never goes wrong at all. That second part is the real secret.
In this video:
✔️ The small, common mistakes that quietly ruin a fruit tree, and why they only show up the summer it finally bears
✔️ Why that little plastic nursery tag can girdle and kill your tree years later, and why you should go take it off today
✔️ Why staking a young tree tight does it more harm than good, and how to stake it loose if you must
✔️ The rule of thirds: how thick a branch should be, and how much of a tree you should ever take in one year
✔️ Why two leaders growing side by side will one day split your tree in half, and how to choose the one to keep
✔️ How to cut a branch back to a side branch the old way, so the wound stays small and heals fast
✔️ The HONEST truth about older trees: why you cannot fix ten years of crooked growth in one afternoon, and what happens if you try
✔️ Why he prunes in the warm months, and the three-cut method that keeps a heavy limb from tearing the bark
✔️ Why stripping a limb bare to the tip is one of the worst things you can do in a windy place
✔️ Why picking off a young tree's first fruit is the hardest and wisest thing you will ever do for it
✔️ An important warning: why you should never feed peach, plum, or cherry clippings to your livestock
✔️ His whole system: a few small cuts in the first three years, then one slow walk around each tree every summer
This is the whole of his forty years' wisdom. Put a gentle hand on a tree while it is young, and you will not spend the rest of your days fighting it.
Which fruit tree gives you the most trouble, the peach, the apple, the plum, or the cherry? Tell me in the comments below, along with your county and your climate, for trees grow differently across this country. I read every one.
Next time, I will show you how to feed a fruit tree from cheap plain things for next to nothing, the old way, instead of buying the dear bottled fertilizers.
The old people kept their orchards standing not with saws, but with a gentle hand, sharp pruners, and the patience to shape before they had to fix. The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it.
