Description

Some things that feel completely normal in other countries can be treated differently in Japan. Here are 3 situations that can surprise foreign visitors. First, being refused because you’re a foreigner. Although many Japanese businesses welcome international visitors, some establishments have refused foreign customers or displayed signs saying “Japanese Only.” These policies have sparked controversy because foreign visitors can feel excluded simply because of their nationality. Second, tattoos. In many countries, tattoos are widely accepted as a form of self-expression. In Japan, however, some onsen, gyms, pools, and other public facilities still restrict visitors with tattoos. This is partly linked to historical associations between tattoos and organized crime, although attitudes are changing and some facilities now allow tattoos or offer private bathing options. Third, wearing a swimsuit. At many public swimming pools, swimsuits are completely normal. But traditional Japanese onsen have different rules. In most shared bathing areas, guests bathe without swimsuits after washing themselves thoroughly. For first-time visitors, this can feel unfamiliar or awkward, but it’s part of the bathing custom. Different countries have different social expectations, and knowing these rules beforehand can help you avoid surprises during your trip. #japan #japanlife #japaneseculture
