Description
A hundred years ago, “playground safety” barely existed.
In this video, we dive into the bizarre and genuinely terrifying history of playgrounds in America — from simple Boston sand gardens in the 1880s to giant steel death traps like the Giant Stride, scorching metal slides, brutal seesaws, towering jungle gyms, and merry-go-rounds built over concrete and packed dirt.
Why were spaces meant for children so unbelievably dangerous for so long? Why did adults accept broken bones, burns, concussions, and worse as just part of growing up? And what finally forced cities, schools, and manufacturers to change?
We also look at the very different idea that emerged in Europe: adventure playgrounds, where kids played with scrap wood, tools, mud, and junk — yet often suffered fewer serious injuries than children on America’s “safe” steel equipment.
This is the story of playgrounds before rubber mats, before safety rails, before regulations — when childhood fun often came with real risk.
