Description

WW2, from the records. https://warshelf.com/ August 9, 1945. Late in the morning a message is carried into a conference room inside the Imperial Palace, where Japan's six-man war council has met for the first time to discuss surrender. A second city has been destroyed by a single bomb. The city is Nagasaki. The six men take in the news and go back to arguing, three against three, exactly where they started. Bockscar had circled Kokura for fifty minutes under haze before turning south with fuel for one pass. Hours earlier the Soviet Union had crossed into Manchuria. That night the War Minister tells the cabinet the Americans have a hundred bombs, a story invented by a captured P-51 pilot who knew nothing about physics. The United States has no third bomb ready at all. At two in the morning the Emperor decides. The secretary's notes of that meeting mention Hiroshima. They do not mention Nagasaki. And the army's bulletin on the city, printed the next day because nothing else could be, says the damage is expected to be comparatively slight.
