Here are my 101 fixes for the house and the car — written plain, indexed by symptom: https://dalerwhitfield.com/
A retired county deputy protected her house with $38 of hardware. The couple two doors down had cameras and a talking doorbell, and their house was the one that got broken into.
Sergeant Dale Whitfield spent thirty years as an Army quartermaster keeping thieves out of a supply room while Congress kept cutting his budget. In this video he goes through 35 cheap home-defense tricks that the retired deputies and detectives he has coffee with use in their own homes. Each one does one of the three jobs he lived by in supply: deter, detect, delay.
You'll learn why a fake-rock spare key is the first place a burglar looks, how to stop a sliding door from being lifted out of its track, and why a door chain isn't a lock. You'll also see how a zip tie stops the coat-hanger trick on a garage door, and how a five-dollar box of 3-inch screws in the strike plate does more against a kick than a three-hundred-dollar smart lock.
Every fix is legal and needs no gun, no heavy lifting and no contract, and none of them comes with a monthly monitoring bill. There are fire-safety rules for every lock and door brace, a worst-night plan for seniors living alone, and a number one tip that costs nothing at all.
If someone you love lives alone in a quiet house, subscribe so these briefings are here when they need them.
