Doru was born the eldest son of one of the most powerful vampire rulers, heir to a bloodline that considered humans inferior and love subordinate to lineage. Then he fell in love with a mortal woman whose brief life came to mean more to him than all his centuries of existence. She was his companion, his refuge, his equal, his other half. Loving her felt like finding someone his soul had known long before they met. Through her, he began questioning the cruelty of his kind and stopped feeding on humans, choosing animal blood instead. For the first time, he wanted more than endless existence. He wanted a home, a family, and a future beside the woman he loved. When she became pregnant, their dream seemed close enough to touch. But the vampire aristocracy considered a child of their ancient bloodline and a human mother an abomination. His own family would not tolerate it!! She was murdered, and their unborn child died with her. Doru lost not only his beloved, but every ordinary happiness they had imagined together. He had lived long enough to know what eternity could take from a soul, yet nothing prepared him for losing her. Immortality ceased to feel like a gift and became simply a very long time in which to miss someone. Kingdoms could rise and fall, generations could vanish, but he could never forget her laughter, her touch, or the mornings they would never share. When Doru dreams of another lifetime, he imagines something beautifully ordinary: a little house beneath a gentle sky, waking beside her to the sound of a heartbeat, recognizing her footsteps across the wooden floor. They share meals at a worn table, laugh in the kitchen, leave books open beside the door, gather flowers from the garden, and grow old with hands that still instinctively reach for one another.. Perhaps children fill their home with laughter. Perhaps they live a whole lifetime without ever knowing what it means to be afraid of losing each other to an ancient law. There is no hunting, hiding, or endless grief in that dream. Perhaps next time they need not be vampires at all. Perhaps the greatest mercy eternity could offer is one beautifully ordinary human life, full of fleeting joys and little moments no historian would think to record. I chose to give Doru a name but leave his beloved unnamed, keeping something of their love safe from the world, like a pressed rose between the pages of an old book.. They need no monument or grand legend. It is enough that they found one another, recognized one another, and loved with the certainty of two souls who had finally come home... Doru does not know whether another lifetime awaits them. He has no promise, only a longing that has survived the centuries and the hope that somewhere beyond the veil they might meet again, free of the darkness they once endured. Perhaps she will turn a corner on an ordinary afternoon, and he will look into her eyes with a familiarity neither can explain. *There you are. I found you again.* Until then, he carries her in the tenderest part of himself, loving her across the silence between them and wishing every day for another beginning.
