Description

Every family has one. A round blue tin that says Danish butter cookies on the lid — and every child who ever opened one knows the feeling. You lift the lid expecting cookies, and instead you find thread. Spools, needles, a tangle of buttons, a thimble, and at the bottom, underneath everything, a handful of long pins with fancy heads that nobody has used in eighty years. In March of 1910, grown men in the Chicago city council spent an afternoon shouting at each other about whether one of those long pins should be illegal. The men cheered. The women hissed. That pin is still in the tin. 📌 ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE FIRST: for about two hundred years, the sewing box was the one corner of the house that belonged entirely to women. Men didn't open it. When the jewelry was inherited, somebody wrote it down. When the silver was inherited, somebody counted it. The sewing box just got passed along, lid closed, from one drawer to the next — which is exactly why the good pieces are still in there. No buttons today — I did a whole video on those. Today is everything else. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This video is based on over 20 years of firsthand experience in the jewelry industry combined with extensive research into publicly available financial reports, SEC filings, brand earnings calls, material spot prices, and secondary market resale data from platforms including Chrono24, The RealReal, and major auction houses. Every production cost estimate and markup figure cited in this video is based on industry-standard calculations using current precious metal and gemstone wholesale pricing.
