Description

To understand one of the largest animals on Earth, scientists are studying something almost unbelievably small: the parasites living on its skin. 🐋🔬 What if one of the keys to protecting humpback whales has been living on their skin all along? Parasitologist Laurent Soulier studies the tiny organisms that inhabit marine mammals. His research is based on a fascinating idea: to better understand the infinitely large, sometimes you have to investigate the infinitely small. His unlikely subject? Whale lice. These tiny parasites could contain valuable information about the whales they live on, potentially helping scientists better understand and protect entire humpback populations. But there is one major problem: Laurent needs samples collected from living whales. His research takes him from the laboratory to the waters of New Caledonia, where getting close enough to a humpback becomes a scientific mission with very real risks. A whale can weigh around 40 tons, and even without aggression, the movements of such an enormous animal can be dangerous to a diver. Then comes another challenge: how do you remove a minuscule parasite from the skin of a moving giant underwater? With the help of local expertise, Laurent must develop a way to obtain the samples his research depends on. From microscopic parasites to some of the largest animals alive, follow an extraordinary scientific investigation where two radically different scales of life collide — and where a tiny creature could reveal crucial secrets about an ocean giant. 🔔 Subscribe now and hit the notification bell to embark on a journey of knowledge and discovery with us.
