Description

India $100 Billion Chip Bet: The Semiconductor Revolution Explained India is making a massive push to build its own semiconductor ecosystem. From chip design and manufacturing to advanced packaging, semiconductor equipment, materials and skilled engineers — India is trying to build a much larger role in the global chip supply chain. In this documentary, we explain the complete story of India's semiconductor revolution in simple language — why chips are so important, why India wants to manufacture more of them, what Tata, Micron and other companies are building, how Semicon India changed the semiconductor ecosystem, and what Semicon 2.0 means for India's future. India's semiconductor demand is projected to reach around $110 billion by FY2030, according to the Government of India. At the same time, India has historically depended heavily on semiconductor imports while having a strong presence in chip design and engineering. Now the situation is changing. The Government of India approved Semicon 2.0 in July 2026 with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore. The programme focuses on six major areas: chip design, semiconductor machines and materials, new fabrication plants, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent development. By September 2026, the government said that five semiconductor manufacturing plants had commenced commercial production, while India was also expanding its chip-design and engineering ecosystem. This video explains: • Why semiconductors are called the backbone of modern technology • What exactly a semiconductor chip is • How chips are designed, manufactured and packaged • Why semiconductor manufacturing is so difficult • Why India became a major chip-design destination • India's semiconductor journey and the India Semiconductor Mission • What Semicon India 1.0 achieved • What Semicon 2.0 is trying to change • Tata Electronics and India's planned semiconductor fabrication ecosystem • Micron's semiconductor assembly and testing operations in India • India's growing OSAT and ATMP ecosystem • Why semiconductor packaging is important • Why semiconductor equipment and materials matter • India's growing electronics manufacturing industry • The role of AI, smartphones, automobiles, EVs and data centres in chip demand • Why global companies are looking to diversify semiconductor supply chains • India's opportunities in the global semiconductor industry • The biggest challenges India still needs to solve • Why building a semiconductor industry takes years • India's future in chip manufacturing and semiconductor design One important point: building semiconductor factories is only one part of the story. That is why India's semiconductor strategy is increasingly moving beyond simply setting up factories. The larger goal is to build an ecosystem that can move from "Silicon to Systems" — from chip design and manufacturing to packaging and eventually products. India already has a large electronics manufacturing base and a huge domestic market. The country also has a significant pool of engineers and chip-design professionals. But there are still major challenges. India is therefore competing in an industry where countries and companies have spent decades building expertise. So the real story is not simply: "India is making chips." The real story is: Can India build the complete semiconductor ecosystem needed to compete globally? and finally to the bigger question of India's place in the global chip supply chain. This is the story of India's semiconductor revolution.
