10 Truths About .30-06 Ammo Most Owners Never Know 🔗 THE BENCH BOOK + 2 TOOLS → https://dylanbenett.com A man named Wayne Kessler set a rifle on my counter last November and asked me why it had stopped working halfway through his first deer season with it. It was an M one Garand. His father carried one in Europe, and this one came to Wayne when his father passed. It shot fine for two boxes at the range. Then Wayne decided to take it hunting, so he bought what the store had in thirty aught six, a heavy hunting load, the kind that says magnum performance on the box. He fired maybe thirty of them. By the end, the rifle would fire one round and refuse to load the next. When I took it apart, the long steel arm that runs along the right side of the barrel, the operating rod, was bent. You could see it if you laid it on the glass. The rifle was not broken because it was old. It was broken because it was fed a cartridge that was correct on the label and wrong for that rifle. The man who sold him the ammunition told him thirty aught six is thirty aught six. A buddy at deer camp told him the same thing. They were both wrong, and they were wrong in the most common way there is. So here is what we are doing today. Ten truths about thirty aught six ammunition that most owners have never been told. Some of them will save you money. A couple of them will save you a rifle. And number one is the reason Wayne's Garand came to my bench. It is a ten second check, it is stamped right on the steel, and almost nobody looks at it before they buy a box. Stay with me, we will get there. I am Dylan Benett. I run the service bench at a gun shop, which means I see rifles after the mistakes, not before them. The thirty aught six is probably the most common big game cartridge sitting in American gun safes, and that is exactly why so much of what people believe about it is a little bit off. Let us start.
