Description
How did America build one of the most complex border barrier systems in the world?
In this documentary, we explore the engineering, construction, technology, geography and challenges behind the U.S.-Mexico southern border barrier system.
From extreme deserts and rocky mountains to the Rio Grande, building border infrastructure across such a huge and difficult landscape required much more than steel barriers. Engineers and construction crews had to deal with remote terrain, access roads, private land, environmental concerns and difficult construction conditions.
But the system doesn't rely on physical barriers alone. Modern border security also involves surveillance cameras, radar, sensors, towers and other technologies. Earlier programs such as SBInet — often described as a “virtual fence” — attempted to combine technology into a large-scale surveillance network before the program was ended in 2011.
This video also looks at the evolution of border barriers, the engineering behind steel bollard designs, underground tunnels, surveillance technology and how the system changed over the decades.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes official Southwest border encounter statistics, which are useful for understanding how border encounters have changed over time.
