Description

My name is Isaac Miller. I am Amish, and I have run my own forge in Lancaster County for thirty-one years. You look for hammer marks and a rough black surface, and when you find them you pay. That is backwards. Roughness is the easiest thing in the world to fake. A factory presses hammer marks into steel a thousand times an hour. What it cannot fake is the fade. Forged metal thins gradual and a little uneven, thick to thin, like a candle drip, because a man pushed it there blow by blow. Stamped metal is uniform, or it steps down in sudden machine-made jumps. The costume can lie. The fade cannot. In this video I show you the three-second check, the fade, the parting seam, the twins test, how to beat pressed-in fake hammer marks, forge welds against arc-weld beads, and what a hand-struck touchmark looks like. All it costs you to learn is a four dollar flashlight. I also tell you where it falls short. This reads how a thing was made, not always whether it is worth buying. WHAT YOU WILL NEED A small pocket flashlight $4 Any piece of iron to practice on Two of the same item for the twins check Good light to sight down a taper A WORD OF CAUTION Feel the spine, never the edge. An old drawknife will open your thumb to the bone before you feel it happen. Subscribe if you want more of what a forge teaches about buying iron once. #handforged #blacksmith #amish #antiquetools #fleamarketfinds #oldtools #wroughtiron #toolcollecting
