Description

There are more than 700 million pigs on Earth. We eat their meat, their fat, their skin. And not one shop on the planet sells pig milk. Here's why. pig milk | why don't we drink pig milk | why do we drink cow milk | history of dairy | animal domestication | lactose intolerance history | why cows were domesticated | pig cheese A mother pig is a mammal with fourteen teats who produces milk every day for weeks. So why, in ten thousand years of farming, did nobody ever milk her? Humans milk cows, goats, sheep, buffalo, camels, horses, donkeys, reindeer and yaks. We climb cliffs for wild honey and chase half-wild reindeer through snow for a cup of milk. But never the pig. In this animated history video we work through it step by step: the Dutch farmer who spent 40 hours milking pigs to make the world's first pig cheese, why a cow's udder has a storage tank and a sow's does not, the 15-second milk let-down, and the real reason underneath all of it. A cow turns grass you cannot eat into food you can. A pig has a stomach like yours and eats exactly what you eat, so milking one means putting your own food through an animal and getting less back. Then the second half of the story: cattle domesticated 10,500 years ago, the first milk residues in pottery from north-western Anatolia, 7,000-year-old cheese strainers from Poland, and the single mutation that let adults in some populations keep digesting milk while most of the world still cannot.
