Description
Tesla Cybercab is finally on the road — and it has no steering wheel, no pedals, and no human driver.
As of September 2026, Tesla has begun offering limited Cybercab rides in Austin, Texas. Unlike Tesla's earlier robotaxi vehicles based on the Model Y, the Cybercab was designed from the beginning as a purpose-built autonomous vehicle with no traditional driver controls. Tesla says the vehicle uses camera vision and sensors to navigate, while passengers interact with the vehicle through the Robotaxi app and touchscreen.
But the technology is only half of the story.
At the same time Cybercab entered passenger service, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an Audit Query into Tesla's certification of the vehicle. The agency is examining how Tesla determined that the Cybercab complies with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards despite its unusual design without traditional human controls.
In this video, we break down:
• How Tesla Cybercab actually works
• Why there is no steering wheel or pedals
• How Cybercab differs from Tesla's Model Y Robotaxi
• Where Cybercab rides are currently available
• What passengers actually experience
• How autonomous vehicles perceive roads and traffic
• The role of cameras, AI and neural networks
• Why Tesla's regulatory situation matters
• What the NHTSA investigation is examining
• What this could mean for the future of transportation
• Why robotaxis may look very different from today's cars
Tesla currently says Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin, Texas, while the broader Robotaxi service also operates with Model Y vehicles in several U.S. locations.
This isn't about blindly celebrating autonomous driving or predicting that traditional cars are disappearing tomorrow. It's about separating what is already happening from what is still being developed, tested, regulated, and debated.
Is a car without a steering wheel the future of transportation — or are we still much earlier in the experiment than it appears?
