Description

You load the stove at ten and at five in the morning there is gray ash and one black chunk and a house at fifty-six degrees, and you blame the wood. The wood is almost never the problem. Seven nights last February, one trick a night. Same stove, same tree, every piece at eighteen percent on the meter, twenty-two pounds a load on the kitchen scale, loaded at ten o'clock sharp. A thermometer on the stove top, one eighteen inches up the pipe, one in the back bedroom thirty-one feet away. And a wind-up alarm clock, because I got up at two every one of those seven nights and wrote down what I found. Six were dead before two in the morning. The damper shut all the way down died at one forty and put the worst numbers of the week on my flue. The packed firebox choked itself out. The big night log on a thin coal bed never lit at all. Banking with ash lost the heat but won something else, and I will tell you what. The wet piece on top was the only night that made my chimney measurably worse. The seventh had the stove top at three hundred and twenty at six in the morning with two rounds still holding shape, and it is three steps that cost nothing and take about ninety seconds more than what you are doing now. It is last in the video and the six failures are what make it make sense. And at the end I will tell you what I worked out after all seven, which is that in the camps there was never a trick. There was a man. Harlan Sawyer. Sawyer Ridge, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Forty-two years in the timber, 1969 to 2011, and forty-five winters on this stove. Stack it dry, friend. It keeps. A note before anybody writes in: if you run a catalytic stove, follow your manual's engagement procedure and not me, because that is a different machine with a different sequence. If your chimney has no liner, do not run long slow fires at all. And ask anybody selling you a stove what the firebox volume is in cubic feet, because under about 1.8 there is no trick on earth that gives you eight hours.
