South India Was Almost a Separate Country? 😳 Before Independence, much of present-day South India was part of the Madras Presidency. Social reformer E.V. Ramasamy Periyar led the Self-Respect and Dravidian movement, opposing caste inequality, Brahmin dominance and the growing influence of Hindi. Later, the idea of a separate Dravida Nadu emerged, envisioning a separate Dravidian country in South India. But the political situation changed after Independence. In 1956, the States Reorganisation Act reorganised major parts of South India largely on linguistic lines, creating or reshaping states such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Mysore State and Madras State (later Tamil Nadu).
