Now on Spotify 🎧 Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/033Kcgn9MvUZnvXK7B8k71 More than a million years ago, long before cities, farming, writing, or even our own species as we know it, ancient humans were shaping stone into something strangely precise: hundreds of limestone balls that seem too deliberate to dismiss. This video explores the mysterious spheroids found at ‘Ubeidiya in Israel, one of the earliest Acheulean sites outside Africa. Dating to around 1.4 million years ago, these objects raise a difficult question: were they accidental by-products of stone toolmaking, or were early hominins intentionally trying to create near-perfect spherical forms? Researchers used detailed 3D analysis to study how the stones were shaped. The results suggest that as the spheroids were worked, they did not simply become smoother or more worn down — they became increasingly spherical, moving toward an ideal geometric shape. That means the makers may have been following a planned strategy, removing material in a controlled way to impose symmetry on raw stone. Their purpose remains unknown. They may have been tools, hammerstones, percussive objects, or devices used for a task we no longer understand. But their importance goes beyond function. If early humans were deliberately creating these forms, then they were not only reacting to stone — they were imagining a shape before it existed, then working the material until it approached that idea. The documentary follows one of the oldest puzzles in human technology: why would ancient hominins spend so much effort making stone balls? Whether practical, symbolic, experimental, or something in between, the spheroids of ‘Ubeidiya suggest that the roots of planning, geometry, and abstract thought may reach far deeper into the human past than we once believed. If you feel like sharing, mention where you’re watching from and what time it is there — then imagine someone 1.4 million years ago holding a rough piece of limestone, turning it again and again, and shaping it toward a form that still makes us wonder why.
