Description

DEEP DIVE WITH SPOILERS: I’m posting a second video review of Netflix’s 7-part series “East of Eden,” an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, which he considered his magnum opus. In this video, I discuss Steinbeck’s theme of “free will vs. determinism.” Did Cain, who slew his brother Abel, have free will to change his destiny? I also discuss the concept of “free will vs. determinism” in the life of Cathy Ames, the antagonist of the story, whom Steinbeck portrayed as a psychological monster. Netflix has reimagined the novel to give Cathy Ames a traumatic backstory. Should her behavior be excused as determined by circumstances, rather than her own choices?
