Description
How did an accidental laboratory observation lead to one of the most important medicines in history?
In 1928, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming was studying Staphylococcus bacteria at St. Mary's Hospital in London.
After returning from a holiday, Fleming noticed something unusual in one of his contaminated culture plates.
A mold had begun growing.
But around that mold was something even stranger:
The bacteria weren't growing normally.
Fleming realized the mold was producing a substance capable of inhibiting certain bacteria.
He eventually named that substance penicillin.
But discovering penicillin was only the beginning.
Fleming struggled to isolate and stabilize the substance, and his discovery attracted limited attention for years.
Then, more than a decade later, scientists including Howard Florey, Ernst Chain, and Norman Heatley helped turn Fleming's discovery into a practical antibacterial treatment.
World War II created an urgent need for medicines capable of treating infected wounds.
Scientists and pharmaceutical manufacturers worked to dramatically increase penicillin production.
Researchers searched for more productive strains of Penicillium mold, and one particularly useful strain was famously discovered on a moldy cantaloupe from a fruit market in Peoria, Illinois.
By 1944, large-scale production had transformed penicillin from a laboratory curiosity into a vital wartime medicine.
Most of the penicillin carried ashore with Allied forces on D-Day came from Pfizer's large-scale production facility in Brooklyn.
The discovery that began with a contaminated culture plate had helped launch the antibiotic era.
In this video:
• Alexander Fleming and the discovery of penicillin
• The famous moldy Petri dish
• Staphylococcus bacteria
• How Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928
• How Penicillium mold affected bacteria
• Why penicillin initially struggled to gain attention
• Howard Florey and Ernst Chain
• Norman Heatley and penicillin development
• The moldy cantaloupe discovery
• How penicillin was mass-produced
• Penicillin during World War II
• Penicillin and D-Day
• The beginning of the antibiotic era
• How one accidental observation changed medicine forever
Sometimes the biggest discoveries begin with something that looks like a mistake.
For Alexander Fleming, it was a contaminated culture plate.
What he noticed next helped change medicine forever.
