According to Valmiki Ramayana (Uttara Kanda)and various Pauranic traditions, Vedavati performed intense penance to attain Lord Vishnu as her husband. During his conquest of the worlds, Ravana encountered her and violated the dignity of a devoted ascetic. Before leaving her mortal body, Vedavati vowed that she would return and become the cause of Ravana's destruction. Many later traditions identify this divine return with the appearance of **Mata Sita, whose abduction eventually led to the great war in Lanka and the fall of Ravana.
