FORGOTTEN Vaseline and Cocoa Butter Tricks Black Women Used Before Expensive Skincare
Augustinus Bader charges $190 for 1.7 oz of Rich Cream. La Mer wants $220 for moisture replenishment.
📖 The book I mention in the video — The Melanin & Grace Beauty Manual: gloria.myreads.store
Both promise occlusive therapy and barrier repair. Black women were doing the same thing in the late 1960s with a $2 jar of Vaseline and a tin of cocoa butter from the corner drugstore, and their skin stayed plump into their 70s.
The trick was never just Vaseline. It was a layering system: glycerin and rosewater on damp skin within 60 seconds of stepping out of the bath, then sealed with Vaseline or cocoa butter. The glycerin pulled water in, the Vaseline locked it down. Women who followed this had skin that stayed soft for 12 to 16 hours without reapplying. Weekly steam over a kitchen pot opened pores so the layers could sink deeper. Cocoa butter pressed onto dark spots faded post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation over months. Raw shea butter worked during the day because it absorbed faster and had natural SPF between 3 and 6.
Crisco on cracked winter elbows. Cold spoons from the icebox on under-eye puffiness. Castor oil brushed along lash lines for 3 to 4 months until brows and lashes thickened. A baking soda scrub once a week cleared dead skin so the glycerin could actually penetrate. Honey and egg white masks before church for temporary tightening. Lemon juice mixed into Vaseline at night faded stubborn spots, though the photosensitizing risk meant strict nighttime use only. None of it cost more than $6 per ingredient, and most of those ingredients lasted six months to a year.
