Description
At 68, Doug retired to the Philippines. Five months later, his daughter arrived with apartment listings near her home in Ohio—and a plan to bring him back to America.
She thought he was lonely, struggling, and too embarrassed to admit the move had been a mistake. Within three days of her arrival, he was checking flights home.
But during a visit to a small neighborhood shop near Iloilo, she began to see a part of his life he had barely mentioned.
This story explores the family conversations behind retiring abroad: missing your children and grandchildren, starting over after losing a spouse, making friends in the Philippines, and deciding where you want to spend the next part of your life.
If you're considering moving to the Philippines, how does your family feel about it? Are they encouraging you, or asking you to stay close to home? Share your experience in the comments.
