Description
15 Vegetables You Should Plant in October ASAP! DO IT NOW!
Most folks rake the leaves, cover the mower, and call the garden done in October. My granddaddy called it the start of next year.
Zeb Combs here, from up a holler in the Appalachian mountains. In this video I count down 15 crops you can still put in the ground this October, straight out of my granddaddy's leather journal. These are the same plantings that fed our family through the Great Depression and put greens on the table in March, before anything else woke up.
You'll learn which old varieties laugh at frost and how to plant each one. You'll also see what the grocery store charges you for the same food, and why most of these crops quietly disappeared from American gardens.
In this countdown:
Egyptian walking onions, the onion that plants itself
Mache and miner's lettuce, salad under the snow
Black Spanish winter radish and overwintering spinach
Horseradish and rhubarb, plant once and eat for decades
Winter lettuce under an old window cold frame
Hairy vetch and crimson clover, the free nitrogen the fertilizer companies never mention
Austrian winter peas and sunchokes
Garlic, true French shallots, and the near-extinct potato onion
And number one, the thing every crop on this list has been pointing at
This isn't prepper doomer talk. Your grocery bill is real, your dirt is real, and October is when next spring's garden gets planted. Pick just one crop from this list and get it in the ground by Sunday.
👇 Tell me in the comments: what did your grandparents plant after the first frost that nobody in your family plants anymore? The most common answer might be the next video.

Keep the old ways they kept.
