Bangladesh's Mega Project: Padma Barrage

Bangladesh is moving ahead with the Padma Barrage (1st Phase), a massive water-management project planned across the Padma River near Pangsha in Rajbari. The approved first-phase project cost is about Tk 34,497.25 crore, with a main barrage approximately 2.1 kilometres long. The planned system includes 78 spillways, 18 undersluices, two fish passes, a navigation lock, guide and approach embankments, and additional offtake structures and river-management works. The project is intended to strengthen irrigation, restore major river systems, reduce salinity intrusion and improve water management in parts of Bangladesh.
