👉 How to find out what your things are really worth → https://mrwalterashford.com Three boxes on the garage floor with your father's handwriting on the side. One says baseball. One says photos. One is a beer case from a brand that stopped existing in the eighties, because everybody in the house already knew what was in it. ⚾ ⚠️ THE HARD FACT FIRST, BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE DEPENDS ON IT: from about 1986 to 1994 the card companies printed hundreds of millions of cards, and because everybody had been told cards were an investment, every one of those cards was kept in perfect condition, all over America, at the same time. That is not a market that is temporarily down. That is arithmetic. If you do not know it, you will spend a month of evenings on the wrong box — and the right box is usually smaller, older, uglier and further back on the shelf. 🗂️ HOW TO GET THROUGH A WHOLE BOX IN ONE EVENING knowing nothing: do not sort by player. Sort by the COPYRIGHT YEAR ON THE BACK into four piles — pre-1970 · the 70s · 1980-85 · 1986-on. Put the last pile back in the box. Move the first pile indoors, flat, dry and dark. NOT the attic. That is the whole evening. 🃏 The three questions a professional answers, in order — and why you photograph BACKS, not just fronts. Never trim, never flatten a bent card under books: every one of those is detectable and turns an honest card into an altered one. 🚬 The genuinely old cards don't look like cards — some are the size of two postage stamps. Plus the four reprint tells (the word "reprint", sharp corners, the size, and the dot pattern under your phone's zoom). ✍️ The signed ball: the SWEET SPOT tells you who mattered. Count the signatures before anything else. And never re-ink a faded signature — a faded genuine one is worth something, a gone-over one is a forgery to everybody in the trade. 🎫 Tickets and programs: a FULL unused ticket is the rare one, because everybody who went, went. And the whole value is the DATE. Write every date in the box into a column and look them up one at a time — the highest-return hour in this video. 🏏 Store-model bat versus professional model: two photographs settle it — the barrel stamp straight on, and the knob, top down. 📰 The glossy 8x10 with a TYPED PAPER CAPTION glued to the back is a press photograph — an original object from that day, not a later copy. Never peel the caption. ⭐ And number one: the paper that looks like office paperwork. Letterhead, a contract, a payroll check, a telegram, a letter answering a nine-year-old boy in 1958. It goes in the recycling in the first ten minutes of clearing a garage — and a card is one of a million identical cards, while a letter is the only one of itself. 💵 THE MONEY RULE: never pay to authenticate something worth less than the fee. Find out roughly what it is first, for free. Then decide what is worth paying for. Turn it over. Read the bottom. Believe what it tells you. 📕📗📘 The three books — Turn It Over · Never Take the First Offer · The Ashford Ledger https://mrwalterashford.com #WalterAshford #Baseball #SportsMemorabilia #BaseballCards #EstateSale #KnowWhatYouOwn
