Ruto Portrait Comes Down! Kagombe Makes Dramatic Move After Dumping UDA

Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe has dramatically removed President William Ruto's official portrait from his office just days after announcing his exit from UDA, triggering fresh political debate over Ruto, UDA and the battle for the Mt Kenya vote ahead of the 2027 General Election. In this political analysis, we examine why Kagombe removed Ruto's portrait, his accusations that the Kenya Kwanza government failed to fulfil promises made to Gatundu South residents, and what his increasingly aggressive political rebellion could mean for President William Ruto in Mt Kenya. Kagombe has also promised to release hundreds of videos highlighting what he describes as President Ruto's unfulfilled campaign promises. At the same time, he has questioned whether Deputy President Kithure Kindiki can successfully mobilise the Mt Kenya region behind Ruto in 2027. Was removing Ruto's portrait simply symbolic of Kagombe leaving UDA, or was the Gatundu South MP sending a much bigger political message? We analyse the politics behind the dramatic moment, the growing battle for Mt Kenya and what Kagombe's next move could mean for UDA.
