Description
Walking into a furniture store on a fixed income can make your stomach drop. When I saw a basic particle-board dresser selling for $279 at IKEA and $379 for the 8-drawer version, I knew I had to find a better way. That same week I found a solid wood dresser for $35 at my local thrift store — typical thrift dressers run $25 to $200 with $70 typical. New dressers average $300 to $1,500 in 2026.
Today I'm sharing exactly how I furnished my home from thrift stores and estate sales at 52 — the 7 things I always buy used, the 3 things I never buy used no matter how cheap, and my Three-Touch Test that keeps me from bringing home a wobbly mistake.
My two rules: The Solid Wood Rule and The Three-Touch Test (Lift, Drawer, Wobble). With those, a thrifted home doesn't have to look like a yard sale.
