Description

In the summer of 1182, a dying king delivered one of the Crusader States' most disciplined defensive victories. Baldwin IV of Jerusalem — the "Leper King," barely out of his teens and losing control of his own body to disease — faced Saladin's invading Ayyubid army near Belvoir Castle, the great Hospitaller fortress overlooking the Jordan Valley. Saladin, entering Palestine from the south of Tiberias, ran into the Crusader army marching back from Transjordan near Belvoir Castle on 15 July 1182. Rather than wait to be struck first, Baldwin marched his forces back from Oultrejordain and attacked Saladin's army near the castle in a fierce, hard-fought engagement. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Belvoir_Castle) [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1182) In this video, we break down: āš”ļø Why Baldwin chose to fight near Belvoir instead of retreating to safety šŸ° How the castle's position shaped the battle's tactics šŸŽ Saladin's use of harassing cavalry, feigned retreats, and archery — and how the Franks' tight battle formation countered it šŸ‘‘ How a king too weak to ride unassisted still commanded one of the era's most feared militaries šŸ“œ What the battle meant for the fragile truce between Jerusalem and Damascus, and the road to Hattin five years later Historians still debate the result — some sources call it a tactical draw with both sides taking light casualties, while others frame it as a hard-won Crusader stand that successfully repelled Saladin's invasion. We lay out the sources and let you decide.
